Digital Technology at the Frontline of Postal Development
“We are celebrating the digitalization of postal activities in Cameroon”. These are the words pronounced by the Secretary General of MINPOSTEL, personal representative of Minister Minette Libom Li Likeng as he presided over the 2024 World Post Day on October 10th 2024, in MINPOSTEL. The event marks the 150th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).
In an era where the development of ICTs and the boom of electronic communication have flooded the production systems and means of communication, reducing the activities of the Post to letters and when the behaviors of individuals have changed considerably, the postal sector of Cameroon opted for a round table conference to emit recommendations on how to maintain the postal sector in tact to ameliorate on its contributions to the development of the entire country.
Organized under the theme: “Collaboration and innovation for a sustainable postal ecosystem”, the round table highlighted the essential role of the Post in the socio-economic inclusion of citizens, particularly to the underserved communities and underprivileged population.
It also served as the ideal platform to inform actors of the postal sector of the importance of good collaboration amongst the partners for a smooth business climate and for participants to share their opinions and expectations on the evolution of postal activities.
The round table was organized in prelude to the celebration of the 2024 Word Post Day observed every 9th October. The commemoration was presided at by the Secretary General of MINPOSTEL, Mr. Mohamadou Saoudi, Personal Representative of the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Minette Libom Li Likeng.
During his address, Mr. Mohamadou Saoudi, highlighted some significant progress made in the sector to support the development of the communities through postal activities. “In perspective, the government is envisaging to assign postal codes for each citizen and put in place a postal development plan. It has for the past 5 years, engaged in restructuring the sector to make it more dynamic and competitive in favor of the population. In time to come, it will host the “e-commerce” hub for Central Africa and is in the process of installing a national payment Switch infrastructure which is a digital platform created to keep track of all electronic financial transactions to guarantee Cameroon’s security”. Said the Minister’s representative.
While the speech of the Director General of UPU, Mr. Masahito Metoki, laid emphasis on the necessity for stakeholders to innovate and collaborate for the progress of the Post, that of the Director General of the Cameroon Postal Services represented by his Deputy, Mr. Nana Youmba Lucien, dwelled on the missions assigned the Postal services of Cameroon, its achievements and perspectives.
The creation of a Regional Office by the UPU in Cameroon testifies of the strategic role Cameroon plays in the realization of postal activities especially after being awarded the Postal Excellence prize in Africa on October 7th, 2022. To support and encourage Cameroon’s postal sector in the realization of its missions, the UPU who today is celebrating its 150th anniversary, offered Material gifts to CAMPOST and SUP’PTIC for training and exploitation. The event also witnessed the prize award of the letter writing competition organized by CAMPOST to the winner of the Center Region Mr. Meva’a Pierre Orchelin.
