Women in the Public Sector Schooled on Cybersecurity.
Across the project F-CYBERSECURITY, promoted by the Women’s Association of MINPOSTEL, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications presided over the opening ceremony of the awareness seminar for women in the public sectors on cybersecurity issues in Cameroon, under the theme,
“The women as key actors in the promotion of cybersecurity and promoters of the responsible use of social media on Tuesday 6th August, 2024, in MINPOSTEL.
The awareness seminar organized by the Women’s Association of MINPOSTEL under the theme: “The women as key actors in the promotion of cybersecurity and promoters of the responsible use of social media”, is inscribed within the framework of the national campaign to promote the culture of cybersecurity and raise awareness on the responsible use of social media.
The event that was presided at by the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Minette Libom Li Likeng, accompanied by her counterpart of the Ministry of Women’s empowerment and the family, Pr. Marie Thérèse Abena Ondoa, had as objective to educate the women in public administrations of the stakes and challenges of digital transformation in Cameroon, particularly those related to the promotion of cybersecurity, train them on the responsible use of social media, how to observe best practices online as well as caution them against online fake news and hate speech.
In her opening speech Minister Minette Libom Li Likeng, emphasized on the need to train women considering their vulnerable nature so that they won’t fall prey to cybercriminals. “If women cannot feel safe online, they will not be able to engage in digital spaces, thus limiting their contribution to Cameroon’s emergence”, the Minister said. She mentioned the efforts made by the Government to foster digital inclusion for Cameroonian women thereby reducing the digital gender divide by providing women with increased access to technology, the internet and digital skills training.
The Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Pr. Marie Thérèse Abena Ondoa, lauded the initiative of La TUTELLE. She enumerated the vast opportunities offered by the internet alongside its setbacks and the challenges faced by women while navigating online. The Minister invited the women to use these tools to boost their productivity, thereby contributing to the digital economy of the country.
The president of the Women’s Association of MINPOSTEL, known as La TUTELLE, Mme PENDE Rolande, after appreciating the Minister for her unflinching support to the Association, explained the F-CYBERSECURITY concept and some perspectives of the association amongst which, the project of one woman one laptop to be realized come December, 2024.
The revelations on the realities of cybersecurity in Cameroon took the women aback as they craved for more of such capacity building seminars. The request was made through the voice of Police Commissioner EYAMO Elise Viviane, Chief of Service in charge of studies and projects in the computer sub-department of the General Delegation of National Security at the closing ceremony presided at by the Secretary General of MINPOSTEL, Mr. Mohamadou Saoudi.
For a better understanding of the subject matter, major themes such as the stakes and challenges of cybersecurity in Cameroon, the best practices on digital platforms and empowering women through digital economy were topics that animated the close to 300 participants at the event by the experts.
