The Cameroon National Pavilion was counted among the 31 national and thematic Pavilions showcasing national telecommunications and ICT potential at the Busan Exhibition and Congress Centre in the Republic of Korea during the ITU Telecom World 2017.
The Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Minette Libom Li Likeng led the powerful delegation of Director Generals of public and private Telecom and ICT institutions and enterprises, and other civil society and Government officials who represented Cameroon on this Global platform.
Organized under the theme: Digital Transformation, a Global Opportunity. The annual fare gave participants the opportunity to feature their great innovations in the international exhibition, expose their potential through the leadership summit and forum, showcase partner sessions, and facilitate networking through a dedicated business match - making service provided in a specially designed space to connect B2B and B2G, enjoy visibility through the 151 accredited media and honor participants through the grand ITU Telecom World Awards.
Minister Minette Libom Li Likeng grabbed the opportunity of a round table conference to sell Cameroon's potential and Government's major achievements in the sector through an expose titled "The Role and Activities of the Public Sector in Digital Transformation in Cameroon." The Minister in her expose highlighted the political will of President Paul Biya to transform the ICT Sector, the existence of an appropriated legal framework for regulation, the dynamism of the ICT Sector with varied actors and a strategy plan for a digital Cameroon by the 2020 threshold.
Minister Libom brandished major infrastructural projects implemented by the government like the construction of submarine cables to link Cameroon to other countries by fibre optics, the National Backbone project, the construction of two internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in Yaoundé Douala and much more.
The Minister was also received in audience by the Secretary General of the International Telecommunications Union, Houlin Zhao with whom she discussed challenges like the ills of citizen journalism through social media, inadequate funds to finance telecom and ICT projects and other problems similar to those encountered by other developing countries in the world.
In an interview to "P et Performances" Dr. Winfred Mfuh, member of the Cameroon Delegation to Busan said participation in such international fares reveals the participating country to the world, attracts investors and shares the experiences of other countries on Telecom and ICT issues.
Commenting on Cameroon's cooperation with ITU Dr. Windfred Mfuh, Technical Adviser N° 2 at MINPOSTEL stated that "With the ITU it is a win/win cooperation. Belonging to the ITU is crucial. This is because the ITU is the first line regulator worldwide and a mediator who regulates and organizes activities in the sector like frequencies which could become very chaotic if not checked, since they do not know national boundaries."
Cameroon's delegation to ITU Telecom 2017 consisted of officials from the Telecommunications Regulatory Board (TRB), the National Agency of Information and Communication Technologies (NAICT), Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL) Viettel Cameroon, civil society officials and other actors in the sector coordinated by officials of Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MINPOSTEL°. These delegates entertained the thousands who visited the Cameroon Pavilion during the fare advertising their products and services, and distributing souvenirs like traditional handmade bags and hats, Cameroonian tea bags, chocolates, the connecting Cameroon worldwide Brochure and much more.
Through these they sold the potential and beauty of Cameroon, Africa in miniature, a haven in Africa and a land of opportunities.
